patient with toothache

Toothache

  • Call the office and arrange for a visit as soon as possible.
  • Over-the-counter Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen is best for dental-related pain. Dose according to your adult/child weight.
  • You can apply a cold compress, or ice wrapped in a towel to the area.

Broken tooth

  • Contact the office. Quick action can save the tooth, prevent infection, or reduce the need for extensive dental treatment.
  • If the lip was also injured, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  • If you can locate the broken tooth fragment, place it in cold milk or saliva and bring it with you to the office.

Knocked out baby tooth

  • Do not replant the tooth due to risk of harming developing permanent tooth.
  • Contact the office and arrange to have your child examined.

Cut or Bitten lip, Tongue, or Cheek

  • Apply ice to the injured area.
  • If there is bleeding, apply firm pressure with a clean towel or gauze.
  • If bleeding cannot be controlled after 15 minutes of pressure, go to the nearest emergency room.

Cold/Canker sore

  • Over-the-counter preparations will usually provide sufficient relief.
  • If you or your child gets these regularly, talk to Dr. DiLuzio and Dr. Smiley about possible prescription treatment.

Knocked out Permanent tooth

  • Find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (top of the tooth), not the root.
  • Gently rinse in cold water if it has been contaminated by dirt. Do not clean or handle the tooth more than necessary.
  • If possible, replant the tooth in the socket immediately and hold it in place by biting down on a towel or gauze.
  • If you are unable to put the tooth back in the socket place the tooth in a clean container with cold milk or saliva.
  • Contact the office immediately. The sooner the tooth is placed back in socket and stabilized, the better the chance of saving the tooth.

Prevention

You can greatly reduce the risk for dental injuries by following a few simple precautions

Do not use your teeth to cut or open things. Make sure to always wear the appropriate safety gear, including a custom mouth guard during all contact sports. This may include a nightguard to protect your teeth from the effects of grinding/clenching during sleep.
